Building Altars
Genesis 12:6-8 ESV
“Abram passed through the land to the place at Shechem, to the oak of Moreh. At that time the Canaanites were in the land. Then the Lord appeared to Abram and said, “To your offspring I will give this land.” So he built there an altar to the Lord, who had appeared to him. From there he moved to the hill country on the east of Bethel and pitched his tent, with Bethel on the west and Ai on the east. And there he built an altar to the Lord and called upon the name of the Lord.”
There was no Jewish faith before Abraham. He was the ancestral father of the Jews. God called on Abraham who was just an idol worshiper until he met God. What was Abraham’s response to God when God spoke to Him? Abraham built an altar to commemorate this God of all things. On that altar He worship the God of promise.
Sometimes when we are moved to worship, we stop long enough to build an altar. Not a stone altar like Abraham, but an altar where we take time to worship God, to honor Him, to love Him, to sing songs of praise to Him and for Him. It is in those times that the sacrifice that we offer unto God becomes a sweet smelling savor to God, and He is honored. As we offer up our offerings to God, He is pleased and He pours out blessings to us.
Prayer:
Lord, I offer up praise and thanksgiving to You. You are my everything. This morning, I build an altar to You, to offer praise, thanksgiving, love and honor to You Lord. To lift up Your name, to sing praise to You, to seek Your face for my day and for my family and friends. Not my will today, but Your will be done. In Your Mighty name of Lord Jesus, Amen!
