Spiritual Growth
Mark 4:26-29 ESV
“And He said, “The kingdom of God is as if a man should scatter seed on the ground. He sleeps and rises night and day, and the seed sprouts and grows; he knows not how. The earth produces by itself, first the blade, then the ear, then the full grain in the ear. But when the grain is ripe, at once he puts in the sickle, because the harvest has come.”
Jesus is saying that this is how the kingdom of God works, and how our spirituality grows. We can plant the word of God in us, and we should, God will give the increase in our spiritual nature in His timing.
In this parable, the man represents Jesus and the believer who sows the Word of God. The seed is the Word of God or the Gospel message. The soil is the heart where the seed (words of God) are planted. The growth is the unseen work of God in the heart, producing spiritual life. The harvest is the time when the mature believer is ready to be gathered to Christ.
God works in ways we cannot fully understand. Just as a farmer cannot force a crop to grow, God makes that happen. The parable teaches patience, trusting God’s timing and process, even when results are not immediately visible. The stages (blade, head, grain) symbolize the journey from initial faith to full spiritual maturity, ready for the harvest.
Share the gospel and the Word but leave the results to God.
Prayer:
Lord, we cannot force anyone to grow spiritually, but we continually pray that you will grow all Christians as Paul said, “from faith to faith,” (Believing faith to full maturity in Jesus.) Lord help us to spread Your Gospel and Your words. In Your name, Lord Jesus we ask, Amen!
