Believing Is Seeing

John 20:24-29

“Now Thomas, one of the twelve, called the Twin, was not with them when Jesus came. So the other disciples told him, “We have seen the Lord.” But he said to them, “Unless I see in his hands the mark of the nails, and place my finger into the mark of the nails, and place my hand into his side, I will never believe.” Eight days later, his disciples were inside again, and Thomas was with them. Although the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you.” Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here, and see my hands; and put out your hand, and place it in my side. Do not disbelieve, but believe.” Thomas answered him, “My Lord and my God!” Jesus said to him, “Have you believed because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.”

Isn’t it amazing that our Lord took time to see Thomas and say a word to Him that we all need to hear. Thomas was not there the first time that the disciples saw Jesus the night of His resurrection, and foolishly he said unless I see for myself I will not believe.

Eight days later when Thomas was with the disciples behind closed and locked doors, Jesus came in. He did not come in for a convincing of the disciples necessarily, He came in to see Thomas. Basically, no man or woman left behind. His message to Thomas, once He showed Him His hands, feet, and the sword scar in His side, “Have you believed because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have NOT seen and yet have believed.”

What’s the message to us? Don’t focus on physical evidence, trust in faith, trust the testimony of those who have believed and know.

Prayer:

Lord, for us two thousand years later, we have to believe Your words, and the testimony of men and women that saw You, heard You and believed with all of their heart that You are our Lord, our Redeemer, our Savior. Believing is seeing with our spiritual eyes all that You said and did for all mankind. In Your name, we believe Lord Jesus, Amen!
