Things That Are Above

Matthew 6:30-33

“But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is alive and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith? Therefore do not be anxious, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For the Gentiles seek after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them all. But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.”

Jesus always, always sees inside of us to see what is motivating us. He looked into the heart of Nicodemus, and the women at the well (John 4), into Peter, and into the Pharisees, and the list goes on and on. He knows what we need in the flesh, but He wants to direct what is going on in our spiritual life first because true life begins in our spirit. In our spirit will be where our motivation for the greater things of God takes shape. When Jesus makes a change in our spiritual desires, He can create in us great works for the kingdom and supply our needs according to His riches in glory at the same time.

Instead of chasing provision, we need to pursue God’s reign and His inherent goodness. Then, watch as He orchestrates our earthly needs into our divine paths. It’s a radical reorientation of our deepest desires, urging us to trade fleeting earthly anxieties for the eternal pursuit of God’s Kingdom and His perfect righteousness, knowing that God will provide for all of our needs physical and spiritual.

Prayer:

Lord, help us to get our eyes off of what we do not have to seek You, getting to know You. Taking daily walks with You, and talking with You. Our spiritual beings need more development every day. Open up our spiritual eyes to see You, to seek You, to follow hard after You and trust that You know exactly what we need. In Your name Lord Jesus we ask, Amen!
