A Merry Heart
Proverbs 15:13, Proverbs 17:22 NKJV
“A merry heart makes a cheerful countenance (will show up on your face), But by sorrow of the heart the spirit is broken.” “A merry heart does good, like medicine, But a broken spirit dries the bones.”
Solomon makes two bold statements that have to do with the way we chose to live our lives. First, in Proverbs 15:13 he says that a heart that is merry, or joyful is rooted in God not just our own thought process. The heart is the center of our will and emotions, so we could say it is the center of our being rooted in God’s true joy it will come from our heart to our outer countenance.
Proverbs 17:22 is similar it uses the term merry heart. The heart that is rooted in God’s joy is good like a medicine. It will bring healing to the whole person in Jesus, and it too will transform our inner being and our outer being. The key to both passages is to be rooted in God’s joy and peace and that will bring about a change in our lives. The opposite in both passages is a broken spirit that will crush us inside and outside.
