Colossians 3:2 ESV
“Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth.”
Paul was sending this letter to the church at Colossae. Their surroundings were a world steeped in a self-absorbed culture and worldly ideals and traditions that had nothing to do with godliness. This was a group of people that had accepted the Lord as their Savior, now Paul was encouraging them to look away from their surroundings and their past and begin to set their minds on Jesus.
We face a similar situation today; we are bombarded with tv adds, movies, sitcoms and the moralities from the likes of Hollywood. Paul’s message is for us today as well; “Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth.” It encourages us to break away from what we are seeing, what bombards our mind on a daily basis and look to the things that Jesus wants to fill our minds with. James 3:17 says, “But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy and good fruits, impartial and sincere.”
Prayer:
Lord, we have a lot of information vying for our minds these days. Some things are confusing because they appear to be simple and harmless. If we hold up Your standards to everything that comes into our minds, how much would really be welcomed in. Set our minds on what You have for us, the things that pertain to true righteousness, then we will be able to accomplish our goals for today. In Your name Lord Jesus, Amen!
