Hearing From Their Own
Luke 24:33-35 ESV
“And they (the two men who were walking to Emmaus) rose that same hour and returned to Jerusalem. And they found the eleven and those who were with them gathered together, saying, “The Lord has risen indeed, and has appeared to Simon!” Then they told what had happened on the road, and how He was known to them in the breaking of the bread.”
It occurred to me today that the men on the road to Emmaus went back and told the eleven disciples that they had seen Jesus and then they shared what the Lord had told them. So, these eleven disciples had already heard the message of Jesus’s resurrection from Mary. Now late in the evening they have heard the message from these two men about all that Jesus had told them. Did the eleven finally get it? Did they believe it when Jesus said that He would suffer and die but that He would rise again? Did they finally understand that Jesus was risen from the dead? Apparently not, they remained in hiding for fear of the Jewish leaders. In fact, Jesus would show Himself to the disciples this same night, but they will remain in hiding for at least another week.
Here is my point, we have the Bible in our possession, so we can read the stories and truths for ourselves. We have listened to hundreds if not thousands of messages about what all Jesus wants for each one of us. We have heard how we should walk daily, trusting and believing in Him. Do we obey the Master beyond all of our fears?
Prayer:
Lord, sometimes we don’t always perceive, know and understand the implications of the messages that we receive from You as we read Your words. Sometimes we have to experience things firsthand to know and understand them. Sometimes Lord, fear grips our hearts and we cannot hear the message that You are sending to our spirits at those times. Quiet our hearts and minds, still the troubled waters, and feed us like only You can. In Your name Precious Redeemer, Amen!
