The Least of These
Matthew 25:37-40 ESV
“Then the righteous will answer him, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you drink? And when did we see you a stranger and welcome you, or naked and clothe you? And when did we see you sick or in prison and visit you?’ And the King will answer them, ‘Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me.”
The righteous asked when did they see Jesus in need and helped Him, indicating that their service was not done for reward or recognition, but as a natural compassion and love. They served out of genuine care and concern rather than a desire to impress God. Jesus said the mark of a true disciple is if we can serve the marginalized, the poor, and the suffering. He is suggesting that when we reach out in love, not in duty, but in sacrificial love to “the least”, it is the same as serving Him.
Prayer:
Lord, this type of servanthood and love can only come from a heart that is truly after You not out of selfishness. Lord, I know this cannot be faked or done out of selfishly wanting recognition, this type of servanthood has to come from the heart and that is what I want. I want to love like You love, care like You care, reach out like You do, only wanting to touch hearts and lives for the Kingdom. Draw me closer to You Lord, Amen!
