Hearing the Holy Spirit (2)

John 16:13 ESV

“When the Spirit of truth comes, He will guide you into all the truth, for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak, and He will declare to you the things that are to come.”

The Holy Spirit of God speaks what is the will of God and the things of God. As I have said before, the Holy Spirit will only speak the things of God and what is consistent with God’s words. So to be able to know and hear what the Spirit of God is saying to us we have to maintain consistent Bible reading.

The Holy Spirit will speak in impressions, things that we should know or do. He will give specific instructions and directions for us to take. We may feel like it is our own mind coming up with things to do or not to do, but to know that it is the Holy Spirit we test the voice with God’s words. It will not be an audible voice typically, but it will be gentle nudges to do the right thing, or to turn away from something that will bring harm.

The Holy Spirit is not harsh or demanding, remember the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. These are the characteristics of the Holy Spirit and He will employ these characteristics in dealing with us and speaking to us. 

Prayer:

Lord, prepare our hearts and minds for You speaking to us and directing our lives. Let Your words be imprinted in our hearts and on our minds so that we can discern You ways in our lives. In Your name Lord Jesus, Amen!
