Mercy

Matthew 9:12-13 ESV

“But when He (Jesus) heard it (that the Pharisees disapproved of Him eating with sinners), He said, “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. Go and learn what this means: ‘I desire mercy, and not sacrifice.’ For I came not to call the righteous, but sinners.”

The Pharisees thought that Jesus should be rubbing elbows with the religious leaders, not sinners. Jesus’s quest on earth was to befriend the sinners to bring them to repentance. His statement, “I desire mercy, and not sacrifice,” meant that He was extending the Fathers love to the lost to bring them repentance, salvation and eternal life, not hang around the ones that thought they were righteous.

When we are around Christians or church folk, look for the ones that look like they need a friend. Someone you can encourage, lift up, strengthen and come along side to support them. Don’t just speak to the same people in your group that you feel comfortable with. Churches and church groups are full of people that need a true friend.

Prayer:

Lord, You lead by example, help us to follow Your example, and reach the hurting, the broken, those in need of encouragement, those in need of You. I know it is ok to have close friends who are not hurting but You desire for us to reach the lost and hurting. Make us more like You. In Your name Lord Jesus, Amen!
