Mighty God
Isaiah 9:6 ESV
“For to us a child is born, to us a Son is given; and the government shall be upon His shoulder, and His name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God…”
To describe Jesus as Mighty God:
In the Hebrew, Mighty God is Jehovah Gibbor, which means superior, strong, mighty, full of unfathomable power. He is able to do anything or create anything, anytime, anywhere. As Jehovah, He is self-sufficient. He existed before anything was created.
As Mighty God, Jesus is called Immanuel or God is with us or God is among us. He is God in flesh that comes down to mankind and He will show His power and might. As Mighty God, He calmed the raging seas with just a word, yet he gave a poor widow her son back from the dead so she could have him to help her in her old age. He cleansed the lepers, raised the dead, healed the sick and infirmed. He raised up those who were lame and gave sight to the blind.
This Mighty God came to shed light on who God really was. Though men saw Him as judgmental, He showed Himself to as a God of love and compassion. He was a friend of sinners, the poor, the retched and the outcast. He was one who cared for the poor and the helpless and He is still all of those things.
Through Him, to those who would believe, He gave them the right to be called sons and daughters of God.
This mighty God took all the pain and suffering of thirty-nine lashes with a cat of nine tails that ripped His skin into shreds, yet on the cross He said, “Father forgive them…” This Mighty God died and rose again so that we could come into a right relationship with God once and for all times through eternity.
Prayer:
Lord, our Mighty God, thank You for caring, thank You for loving us so much, and thank You for the right to be called sons and daughters of God. Today we worship You with our whole heart and we thank You for coming to Your creation in the image of a little innocent child. You are Mighty, Amen!
