The Father’s Glory

John 17:1 ESV

“When Jesus had spoken these words, he lifted up his eyes to heaven, and said, ‘Father, the hour has come; glorify your Son that the Son may glorify you…'”

Right after Jesus tells His disciples that He has overcome the world to bring them peace, He turns to speak to the Father. He looks toward heaven as if just having a conversation with God. That’s the kind of attitude in prayer the Father loves.

This is not just an ordinary conversation or prayer from a subordinate to a superior, this is a conversation between two equals. The Son to the Father in a moment to say, “I’m ready Father to complete my assignment.”

Jesus speaks of a glorification. This glorification will usher in peace for us, but pain, suffering and dying the cruelest of deaths for Himself, and then His resurrection will follow which will finalize the work.

How will this glorify God? It will complete the Father’s work for the world, so that the redeemed can have access to the Father, once and for all times.

Jesus knows what is coming, He knows what He must do for all mankind, and He is not hesitant to follow through with the Father’s plan. In fact He wants to complete the work so that the Father will be glorified, the Son will be glorified and we will receive their glory in our forgiveness and redemption.

Prayer:

Father, thank You for a complete work through Your Son. Thank you for Your glory, and I pray that we will glorify You in our words, deeds and our actions. Help us to show Your glory to the world, the Good News of the Gospel, AMEN!
