Intentions of the Heart

Proverbs 20:5 ESV
“The purpose in a man’s heart is like deep water, but a man of understanding will draw it out.”

We can look at this proverb two separate ways; the purposes and plans of our heart can be like deep unfathomed waters, and we alone are not able to draw it out by ourselves, so we depend on someone wiser, more seasoned than ourselves to help us explore the things that are deep in our thoughts.

It can also mean that when we have deep thoughts, plans, and purposes, we seek God and determine what these things mean. We decipher the deep thoughts and incorporate these thoughts and plans in our own lives.

Paul writes in 1 Corinthians 2:11–13: “For who knows a person’s thoughts except the spirit of that person, which is in him? So also no one comprehends the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God.

Now we have received not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might understand the things freely given us by God. And we impart this in words not taught by human wisdom but taught by the Spirit, interpreting spiritual truths to those who are spiritual.”

Interpreting our own thoughts must be within the realm of the Spirit of God within us. To do this without the Spirit of God guiding gets a lot of people in danger of relying on their own thoughts to guide them.

That is what is happening in the world with worldly people, they trust their own thoughts and interpretations and typically it does not end well. The ancient Greek Philosophers were a prime example of this, their demise was in trusting their own interpretations of their thoughts.

Prayer:
Lord Jesus, as the Spirit of God lives within us, guide the thoughts, plans, and purposes of our heart. Send us trustworthy, people of understanding our way to help guide us. In Your name Lord Jesus, Amen!
