Jehovah-Shalom, God Who is Our Peace
Judges 6:23-24 ESV
“But the Lord said to him, “Peace be to you. Do not fear; you shall not die.” Then Gideon built an altar there to the Lord and called it, The Lord Is Peace… Shalom also means “to be complete or sound” and “absence from conflict.”
Ever since the sin of Adam and Eve, man’s deepest need has been for peace with God. Some people seek peace in drugs, alcohol, or worldly desires. If people find any kind of peace in these kinds of searches, it is a temporary refuge that disintegrates when problems and difficult situations arise.
The only real lasting peace comes from a relationship with God through Jesus Christ. When we receive Jesus Christ as our savior and make him the center of our lives, we receive a peace that is beyond our understanding.
“Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:7 NLT
As long as we keep our eyes on Jesus and not on the waves pounding against us … as long as we truly believe that he loves us, that he has forgiven us, and that all things will work together for good, we will continue to experience his peace.
Believers have the greatest peace with God through Christ (Romans 5:1).
We can rejoice that, not only has He given and continues giving peace, but He himself is our peace (Ephesians 2:14)!
Prayer:
Father, be my peace in the middle of life’s storms. You are the one I run to, the one I trust, the one I seek when nothing else makes sense.
