Where He Leads Me, I Will Follow

Psalms 23:3 ESV
“He leads me in paths of righteousness for His name’s sake.”

We used to sing a song as a teenager in church, “Where He leads me I will follow,” (3 times) then the song continues, ” I’ll go with Him, with Him all the way.” It is a reckless thing to proclaim that we will go with God wherever He leads us and not really mean it, or by not doing it.

We either will follow Him completely or we put ourselves in jeopardy when we walk our own way. It was a simple song and I didn’t give it much thought as a teenager, but when I sing it now in my head, I mean it.

David writes, “He refreshes my soul,” according to the New Living Translation; “He renews my life,” states the Christian Standard Bible. Here David affirms, “He leads me in the paths of righteousness.” The primary job of the shepherd in pasturing his flock, were to lead the sheep in the right way, to food and water, and to fend off predators.

The word for “righteousness” in the original language means “adhering to moral standards like honesty, justice, and uprightness.” God effectively leads His people on the correct path by His Word and through the Holy Spirit’s guidance, and affirmed by His name, the name that is above every name. The question is, will we follow, all the way?

Prayer:
Lord, I trust you to lead me even if things do not go my way. I know that You know what is best for me, better than I know myself.
