Genesis 13:10,12 ESV
“And Lot lifted up his eyes and saw that the Jordan Valley was well watered everywhere (This was before the Lord destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah.) Abram settled in the land of Canaan, while Lot settled among the cities of the valley and moved his tent as far as Sodom.”
Lot was the nephew of Abraham, (at this time he was still called Abram.) When Lot came to stay with Abram, he had nothing. By the time Abram left for Canaan, Lot had amassed great wealth with a large herd of animals and servants.
In Canaan, Lots herdsman and Abram’s herdsman could not get along, so, they parted ways. Lot took the lush grassland of the Jordon near Sodom. Abram took the hill country. After some time, Lot ended up living in Sodom. This was just the beginning of his slide into devastation and destruction.
Sodom was a wicked city and now Lot had married a woman of this country and he had two daughters. During Lot’s time in Sodom, he was captured during a war and taken to a foreign land. When Abram heard that Lot was taken, he gathered together his fighting men and went after Lot’s captures. Abram retrieved Lot and his possessions but this was not the end of Lot’s decline.
After some years, God told Abram that He was going to destroy Sodom and Gomorrah because of their wickedness. Abram pleaded for Lot’s life and family but ultimately Sodom and Gomorrah were to be destroyed.
Two Angels went to bring Lot and his family out of Sodom and as they fled Sodom, Lot’s wife disobeyed God’s command not to look back to Sodom and she turned into a pillar of salt. Lot ended up with no possessions, no wife and two daughters that rebelled against God. In the end Lot was broken beyond remedy.
The lesson to be learned; when we focus on ourselves and the comforts of life we get lazy. We can’t see the dangers around us and soon we are consumed with unrighteousness living. As someone once said, “when you get too close to the fire you’re going to get burned.”
Prayer:
Father, keep my heart towards you! Don’t let me be consumed by things that look enticing!
