2 Timothy 2:6 ESV

“It is the hard-working farmer who ought to have the first share of the crops.”

Paul uses the farmer as a metaphor to encourage Timothy to persevere. Farmers were very hard workers because that was their sustenance and income. Paul adds that the farmer needs to be the first to share the crops they have worked so hard for. Paul is telling Timothy that he must work hard but he also should be rewarded for his hard work and diligence to the ministry of Jesus Christ. I am not saying the minister should be compensated monetarily, but they should be rewarded for their efforts.

The metaphor calls believers, particularly ministers, to embrace a strong work ethic and not be lazy in their calling, knowing that their toil for Christ is valued and rewarded.

Another Perspective:

Some commentators suggest that the minister must first experience the Word themselves before effectively teaching it to others. To this I totally agree. I said that once in a message as a visiting minister at a church. When the pastor came up to me after the message he said, “Do you really believe what you said about applying the word to yourself first before you can preach it?” Emphatically I said yes. The pastor turned and walked away.

Prayer:

Lord, we are all called to work, not just the minister. We all can be effective in some way in touching people’s lives for Jesus. We will look to You for our rewards. In Your name Lord, Amen!
