Ask in Faith

James 1:6-8 ESV

“But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea that is driven and tossed by the wind. For that person must not suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord; he is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways.”

James is telling  his readers that when they ask the Lord for help, don’t second guess the Lord. Don’t ask if you don’t expect to receive. That is doubt getting in the way.

A doubter is a double-minded person, they are in conflict with themselves. The term double-minded comes from the Greek word dipsuchos, meaning “a person with two minds”, or they have two different mindsets when it comes to God and His promises. It’s interesting that this word appears only in the book of James. James may have been the first one to put a label on such a person. The driving force behind such a person is doubt. Doubt, given credence, will interrupt the flow of God’s plan for such a person. It is not that doubt is stronger than God, God just respects our decisions and will stop the flow of blessings at basically our choosing.

Prayer:

Lord, remove every chord of doubt in our lives. Keep us from being double-minded. Even when situations look impossible, help us to remember all things are possible with God. Nothing is too hard for You, Lord. God created the worlds with His words, God can do anything. Thank You, Lord Jesus, amen!
