Pour in Spirit

Matthew 5:3 ESV

“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.”

This is the first of what we call the beatitudes. Take note of the word, be- attitude, an attitude that we need to aquire as Christians.

The idea of being blessed in Jesus’ sermon on the Mount of Olives does not mean feeling happy, necessarily, but it certainly  can encompass that emotion, but it is more of being content. Being blessed means to recognizing what is truly good in a person’s life and why. It refers to those on the right track, who are following a godly pattern of thoughts and actions.

Those poor in spirit recognize they are incapable of providing for themselves by their own strength, goodness, or righteousness. It is a humility that says we need to depend on Jesus to provide for us. We cannot hope to bargain or earn our way into the kingdom of heaven, no, Jesus says that we are blessed because the kingdom of heaven is ours already because of our attitude or possibly our new attitude.

Prayer:

Lord, teach us a new attitude. Self sufficiency has often taken You out of our equation for our lives. Rekindle the understanding that we have what we have because of You. If anything, else is needed, You will graciously provide these things. Our sufficiency is in You Lord, Amen!
