The Lord Is With Him
1 Samuel 16:18 ESV
“One of the young men answered, “Behold, I have seen a son of Jesse the Bethlehemite (David), who is skillful in playing, a man of valor, a man of war, prudent in speech, and a man of good presence, and the Lord is with him.”
Basically, this servant was giving, Saul the king, David’s resume. Saul was tormented because of his rebellion against God and the servant felt like Saul needed someone to sooth him so he told Saul about David’s character and abilities, or his resume. Read David’s resume; He skillfully played (The Lyre- kind of a cross between a small harp and a small guitar), He was a man of valor, which means that he was a person who possessed exceptional courage, strength of spirit, especially in the face of danger. He was a man of war, he knew how to fight in battle hand to hand, or as part of an army and he knew how to use every weapon exceptionally. He was prudent in speech, which means that he spoke wisely, comfortably, intellectually as well as simply. He was a man of good presence which means he looked good, he had it going on! Most importantly the servant ended up with the granddaddy of all characteristics, the Lord was with him.
Now if we were to walk around town and in people’s minds they said, “The Lord is with that person,” you would understand this description. When people can just see us and know that we belong to God, and God is in us, that is an honor. Not just that we must be a Christian, that’s good, but to know that the Lord is with us is a high honor. David didn’t have to swagger so people could see that God was with him, they just watched and listened to David, and they could see God was with him.
Prayer:
Lord, the relationship with You is the difference in David’s personification. I pray that I can have that close walk with you. Not just so people can see that You are with me, but that I have a relationship with You that I know You are shining through me that people would see You and come to know You like I do. In Your name Lord Jesus, Amen!
