Shelter and Stronghold of My Life

Psalms 18:1-2 ESV

“I love you, O Lord, my Strength. The Lord is my Rock and my Fortress and my Deliverer, my God, my Rock, in whom I take refuge, my Shield, and the Horn of my salvation, my Stronghold.”

Have you ever felt vulnerable, exposed, maybe even afraid and it seemed like you had no way to hide yourself from troubles, from an advisory, from the evil one himself? David gives a list of metaphors that describe God when David felt this way. He said that God was his Strength which means that David did not trust his own strength, he depended on God’s strength. He calls God his Rock, Fortress, his Stronghold. Those metaphors describe God’s ability to stand between David and his fears and foes. There is no fortress like our God. David said that God was his Deliverer, the only one that can rescue from ANY situation, even when it looks and feels hopeless. David calls God his Shield. There were two kinds of shields in David’s time, a large one for protection for the majority of the body and a small one for hand-to-hand combat. God as our shield covers our body, heart, mind and spirit. God as Horn of salvation is a sign of strength. There is no one who will fight harder for you and me. There is no one like our God who will rise to separate us from what threatens us.

Prayer:

Lord, You are our Strength, our Rock, our Fortress and our Deliverer this morning. You are our Refuge, our Stronghold and the one who shields us from any evil, harm, danger, sickness and disease. This morning, we run to You for our protection. Be our Strength, our Stronghold, and Shield this morning. In Your name Lord Jesus we ask, Amen!
