Real Freedom

Psalms 118:5-6a ESV

“Out of my distress I called on the Lord; the Lord answered me and set me free. The Lord is on my side; I will not fear…”

From what King David said in this verse, it sounds like King David found himself bound or in prison, but it was never recorded that David was bound or in prison. So, what is David referring to that God set him free from?

According to David’s story, David was in distress more times than he could count. It sounds like God delivered David out of a jam, right? Not necessarily, David goes on to say the Lord is on my side, I will not fear. So why did David say that God set Him free? Because in David’s heart and mind, he was free in his heart and mind.

Think about this; David, a small teenager, went up to meet a warrior (Goliath) that was twice his size. I don’t think David was crying about this encounter, in fact I think he was mad that this giant was talking trash about his God and about the people of Israel. David if he had any fear, we can’t see it, why? David gives the answer in verses six and seven. “The Lord is on my side; I will not fear. What can man do to me? The Lord is on my side as my helper; I shall look in triumph on those who hate me.” (Psalms 118:6-7)

David’s secret is his confidence in God. With God by his side, it was as if he had already won. That gave David freedom.

Prayer:

Lord, we need that confidence. We need to feel in our spirit that we have won even before the battle begins. We may or may not always win, but in You Lord, we always win because in You we have peace and freedom. In You we have freedom from worry or fear. Thank You Lord Jesus, Amen!
