Living Water

John 4:10 ESV

“Jesus answered her, “If you knew the Gift of God, and who it is that is saying to you, ‘Give me a drink,’ you would have asked Him, and He would have given you living water.”

Jesus telling a Samaritan woman that if she understood who He was, she would have asked for the “living water” He could provide, which represents spiritual fulfillment and eternal life. He is using her request for physical water from a well as a metaphor for a deeper spiritual thirst that only He, as the “gift of God,” can quench. This is salvation and eternal life that God offers through Jesus. He later explains that it will be a “well of water springing up into everlasting life” for those who believe in Him. It represents a relationship with God that provides lasting and continuous satisfaction and spiritual fulfillment. Jesus is inviting the woman to ask for this spiritual gift. By doing so, she can experience a deep and lasting satisfaction in her relationship with God that will supersede any physical desires.

Wanting something more fulfilling, with deeper meaning is what most people seek, even if they do not realize the longing that they have inside. Our experience with God is always calling us to a greater fulfillment, a need for spiritual renewal and new experiences with God. To deny it is to be like this woman and just merely existing in life.

Prayer:

Lord, fill us up with Your Spiritual blessings, like peace, joy, contentment, real love, everlasting love, unconditional love and a deeper meaning of who we are in You. In your name Lord Jesus we ask, Amen!
