Seek First the Kingdom

Matthew 6:33 ESV

“But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.”

The word seek here is not just looking for something to say we have it, instead it is an active pursuit that is ongoing, it never stops. We are to make a conscious, and never ending effort to pursue God’s will in everything we do, from our family life to our career. We are to establish a clear order of importance. “Seek first” means that God’s kingdom and righteousness should be the foundation of all other priorities, no just a list that we can cross off each day. Seeking God and His righteousness is the will of God for our lives spiritually first, physically and mentally after that. Does this mean that we should neglect our earthly and daily duties? Of course not. For the Christian, we are taking care of God’s business as a priority—seeking His salvation, living in obedience to Him, and sharing the good news of the kingdom with others. Helping others, ministering to people’s needs. When we do this He will take care of us, as He promised here in this passage.

Prayer:

Lord, this morning we seek Your will and Your ways. Open up Your word to us this morning as we meditate on Your words. Fill our hearts and our rooms with Your presence as we lift up praise in words and songs to You this morning. Hear our hearts cry for those who are broken and need Your healing and deliverance. Then Lord, as we take care of the things we have to do today, provide for our needs according to Your riches in glory. Amen!
