Indignant Against Sinful Practices in the Temple Courts
Matthew 21:12-13 ESV
“And Jesus entered the temple and drove out all who sold and bought in the temple, and He overturned the tables of the money-changers and the seats of those who sold pigeons. He said to them, “It is written, ‘My house shall be called a house of prayer,’ but you make it a den of robbers.”
On Monday of the Holy Week, Jesus’s zeal for the house of God was powerful. His honor was to honor His Father and His Father’s house. On the Monay of the Holy week, Jesus entered the temple only to see contempt for the House of God. The Pharisees and Jewish council had approved of this atrocity because it profited their pockets. The merchants had transformed the Temple courts into a marketplace, exploiting worshippers by charging exorbitant prices for their offerings to God.
Jesus’ actions in driving out the merchants demonstrated His deep passion for maintaining purity and reverence within His Father’s house.
Although it is true still today that some places of worship still exploit the people for money, for the majority of the churches, I pray that they will uphold the House of the Lord as a place to come together to praise and worship our King. The zeal for the Lord should be that we maintain that the House of God is for God and not personal gain. Our zeal when we get together should be to honor the King.
Prayer:
Lord, we glorify and honor You. Let Your zeal be our zeal and maintain Your house as a place to praise, worship, sing and rejoice. We honor You Lord, Amen!
