Bread of Life
John 6:35
“Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst.”
First, understand that Jesus typically speaks to the spiritual situation in a person or group of people. Such as he did with the women at the well (John 4), and with Nicodemus (John 3). In this passage, Jesus is contending with the Pharisees and Jewish leaders, and it will be no different with them. Jesus is speaking to them on a spiritual level, they are stuck on the physical mindset and are unable to rise in their thoughts on spiritual matters.
Jesus speaks plainly to these religious leaders, “I Am the Bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst.” For practicality, we as Christians are eager to have life to the full here on earth and have eternal life waiting for us after we leave this life. That can only be obtained through knowing Jesus personally.
To receive Jesus who is the one who sustains us and blesses us in this life and the life to come. It is NOT about the physical hunger or thirst; it IS about the spiritual hunger and the fulfillment in us. Jesus is the only one that can fill the void in our lives. Like we hunger for food physically, our spirit hungers for the things of God. Jesus is the only one who can fill that kind of hunger and thirst in our lives.
Prayer:
Lord, You alone hold all that we need for this life and the life to come. Help us not to get fixated on the physical needs of this life that we forget to feed our spirit daily. Our life in You is not about bread or drink. Our life should be drawn by Your Spirit, moment by moment in knowing You and providing what we need. In Your name Lord Jesus, Amen!
