Going To the Extreme

Genesis 11:4-6 ESV

“Then they said, ‘Come, let us build ourselves a city and a tower with its top in the heavens, and let us make a name for ourselves, lest we be dispersed over the face of the whole earth.’ And the Lord came down to see the city and the tower, which the children of man had built. And the Lord said, ‘Behold, they are one people, and they have all one language, and this is only the beginning of what they will do. And nothing that they propose to do will now be impossible for them.’”

After the flood, sin did not stop in mankind. God saw that the intent of their heart would do whatever they set their mind to do. Building the tower was not the problem, the intention of their hearts was the problem. God saw that these people were starting on a journey that was going to the extremes.

We have seen it hundreds of times with ideals, religions, cults and communes. People set out on a course, and they get others to follow them.

So, what is the answer for mankind? How do we keep people from extremism? I’m not sure we can do that on a grander level, but I believe if our hearts are pure and we keep our minds set on Jesus, we can make a difference in our corner of the world. God said in 2 Chronicles 7:14, “If my people who are called by my name humble themselves, and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and heal their land.”

(1) Humble ourselves before God. (2) Pray earnestly and pray the promises and the words of God. I know that sounds strange to pray the words and promises of God, but in fact that would be praying to God what God promised, or praying His will to be done.  (3) Seek God’s face, communicate with Him, read His words, listen to the Spirit. Then, with God, all things are possible.

Prayer:

Lord, we need You, and our homes and lands need You, our families need You, our country needs You and our world needs You. Help us Lord, hear our hearts cry. Lead us into You
