Abiding In His Words

John 8:31 ESV

“So Jesus said to the Jews who had believed him, “If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples.”

To “abide” in the words of Jesus is to persevere and cling to His teachings. A disciple in the true sense of the word will remain in the Word, meditate on it day and night (Joshua 1:8), obey it (John 15:14), and share it with others (Matthew 28:18–20). Jesus likened Himself to the True Vine in John 15, and His followers as the branches attached to the vine. In that context, He said, “If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish (in the context of being connected to the vine), and it will be done for you” (John 15:7).

We know what Jesus had said, “You will know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes from thornbushes or figs from thistles? Even so, every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit” (Matthew 7:16-17 NKJV). So, staying in the Father’s Words, everyone will see and hear who we emulate, they will know us by the fruit we bear. They will know us as true disciples of Jesus.

Abiding in Jesus’s words means that His words stick with us, His words are spoken by us, His words have changed our lives. True disciples obey without question and are dedicated to Him. True disciples love Him and at the same time love others unconditionally. True disciples abide in His words and His words abide in them.

Prayer:

Lord, You said that if we abide in You, and Your words abide in us, we are truly (undoubtedly) Your disciples. That’s what we want to be, Your disciples, living according to Your will and mandate for our lives. We want You to live through us continuously. In Your name Lord Jesus, Amen!
