The Holy Spirit
John 7:38-39
“Whoever believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, ‘Out of his (or her) heart will flow rivers of living water.’ Now this He said about the Spirit, whom those who believed in Him were to receive, for as yet the Spirit had not been given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.”
The disciples were told by Jesus in Acts 1:8, “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.” In order for the disciples to be able to carry out the task of witnessing at home in the region, in places they did not normally travel, even places forbidden, and then the entire world, they needed some tools.
They had the words of Jesus, but could they remember them all? They had the platform, but these were not educated men, and they certainly did not have public speaking abilities on their own. Where were the tools to take on this monumental task? The Holy Spirit would give them the capability to do exactly what they needed to do. The Holy Spirit gave them the anointing, the power, the ability to articulate their message. The words of Jesus, the teachings of Jesus, would change the world and it all happened from men and women that did not possess the power or ability on their own.
That gives me hope, that even I can be used of God to spread the Good News. I dare say that without the Holy Spirit, we would not be able to relay the words of Jesus in words, in song, and in music. The Holy Spirit is our power. The Holy Spirit will remind us of God’s words, and of the teachings of Jesus. The Holy Spirit will empower us to communicate the message of the Gospel to the world, here at home and anywhere He sends us.
Prayer:
Lord, we need You every hour. We need Your power within us to speak boldly, to write boldly, to sing with exuberance. Whatever tools that we need to spread the Gospel, You provide, even when we think we can’t. Move in us and through us to declare Your glory, Your Gospel, and to spread Your light to a dark world. In Your name Lord Jesus we ask, Amen!
