Enlightening the Eyes

Psalms 19:8 NASB

“The precepts of the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart; The commandment of the Lord is pure, enlightening the eyes.”

David continues to share why God’s words lead to our benefit.

He says, “The precepts of the Lord, (rules set by God to regulate our behavior). These precepts are prescriptions for doing the will of God and pleasing Him. These precepts are right, (straight forward, upright, correct), rejoicing the heart:” Remember that I said that these precepts are a prescription to doing God’s will and pleasing Him? Well, when we obey, we will be of great joy as well. Jesus said “If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commandments and abide in his love. These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full.” (John 15:10-11)

“The commandment of the Lord is pure, (His commandments are sincere, clear, clean, without prejudice or condemnation). They enlighten the eyes. God’s commandments give to us illumination to see clearly all that He desires of us. Basically, we know where we stand because we understand His commands, but this enlightenment comes when we read His commands.

When we are looking for pure joy and peace, we should go to God’s words. If we are looking for understanding, go to His word, the lights will come on.

Prayer:

Lord, people are looking for true meaning, joy and peace. When we are looking for these things, we can find them in You and in reading Your words with understanding. Guide us in Your truth Lord, Amen!
