Characteristics of a Mighty God

Psalms 18:2 ESV

“The Lord is my Rock and my Fortress and my Deliverer, my God, my Rock, in whom I take refuge, my Shield, and the Horn of my salvation, my Stronghold.”

David gives some descriptions of who God was to him.

Rock- David said that God was someone he could trust in, to be is his security.

Fortress- God was David’s place of refuge, and protection. Even though David had many enemies, David knew he could trust God to protect him. Understand, God did allow David to do his own thing at times, and it got him into trouble, but David knew when he returned to God, God would be his fortress.

Deliverer-God was David’s deliverer many, many times. David experienced God’s delivering power continuously. Understand, He will do the same for us.

Shield- Sheilds were important in David’s day, it was necessary equipment. In a battle, a large shield would protect the whole body. In a hand to hand combat a smaller shield was used as the extension of the hand that would protect. God was an invisible shield for David, he knew that God would protect him from things that he did not see coming.

Horn of my Salvation- Horns were used to symbolize different things in the Old Testament, but David was saying that God was the strength of his salvation, or we could say that God had the power to save him from the enemy’s hands.

Stronghold- Often when I think of strongholds, I think of the strongholds that the enemy launches against us, but God as a stronghold for David was the role of a protector, a refuge, and a source of strength.

I think when David went up against Goliath with nothing more than a sling shot and five smooth stones, David knew beyond any shadow of doubt that God was his Rock, his Fortress, his Deliverer, Sheild, the Horn of his salvation and his Stronghold. David did not need to carry any armor into that battle, his armor was unseen but very effective.

Prayer:

Lord, today, be our Rock, our Fortress and our Deliverer. Keep us in the palm of your hands. Be our shield today, the Horn of our salvation and our Stronghold. In Your name Lord, Amen!
