Open My Eyes Lord

Luke 24:13-17, 21, 26-30, 32 ESV
“That very day two of them were going to a village named Emmaus, about seven miles from Jerusalem, and they were talking with each other about all these things that had happened. While they were talking and discussing together, Jesus Himself drew near and went with them. But their eyes were kept from recognizing Him.

And He said to them, “What is this conversation that you are holding with each other as you walk?” And they stood still, looking sad…our chief priests and rulers delivered Him (Jesus the Christ) up to be condemned to death, and crucified Him. But we had hoped that He was the one to redeem Israel.

And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, He interpreted to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning Himself. They said to each other, “Did not our hearts burn within us while He talked to us on the road, while He opened to us the Scriptures?”

I love this story; it gives me hope that I’m not the only one that misses things when they are right in front of my face. These two guys thought that Jesus was going to overthrow the government and set up His kingdom in Jerusalem in that time period, and they were deeply saddened when it did not come true.

They had missed so much in the scriptures; they had made their own conclusions about the Christ, and they had put their hopes in the wrong kind of freedom. As Jesus begins to explain to them about the Christ from the Old Testament scriptures. They were amazed. More than amazed they were awestruck.

They said afterwords that their hearts burned within them when their eyes became opened to what the scriptures were actually saying about Jesus. Then when Jesus broke the bread in front of them, they recognized this in a way that they had seen Jesus do so many times with the bread. Then their eyes were open to recognize Jesus.

Expectations are good, unless we are trying to figure out God’s next move for our lives and the purpose for those plans. Trust is all we have. Trust God that He knows what is best for our lives and quit trying to figure out thing on your own.

Prayer:
Lord Jesus, open my eyes that I may see You. Open my heart that I can receive You. Open my understanding to Your words. Open up my Spirit that I trust You with every fiber of my being. In Your name Lord Jesus I ask, Amen!
