Clear Eyes

Matthew 6:22-23 ESV
“The eye is the lamp of the body. So, if your eye is healthy, your whole body will be full of light, but if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light in you is darkness, how great is the darkness!”

Jesus calls the eye the lamp of the body. All the light by which we see the world is accomplished by using our eyes. Healthy spiritual eyes give us a clear understanding of the world around us.

Our mind and thoughts, our awareness of the outside world, depends on the attitude of the heart. Good eyes or spiritual eyes determine the good that we see, while faulty eyes (non-spiritual eyes) perceive the inner and outer world in darkness or wrong thinking.

Just as a physical eye that has 20-20 vision, and things look clear, we can enjoy the beauty of the world. Eyes that have cataracts can only see through a haze and the world’s beauty is not perceived.

Focusing on sincere devotion to God and right living is like having clear, healthy eyes. It allows the light of God’s righteousness into a person’s heart, we see the good in this world. The eye that is bad can only see everything is messed up, nothing is good. Then Jesus asks, “If then the light in you is darkness, how great is the darkness?”

Wrong thinking, wrong priorities is like a cataract that blocks the light—it’s a spiritual flaw that interferes with truth. This results in inner darkness. That kind of darkness is hard to overcome.

Prayer:
Open my eyes Lord to see the good and not the bad. Don’t let me be overcome by the darkness of this world or become jaded to the point I only see the atrocities of this life. Let me see through Your eyes Lord Jesus. In Your Holy name I ask, Amen!
