My Stronghold, an Ever Present Help
Psalms 9:9-10 ESV
“The Lord is a stronghold for the oppressed, a stronghold in times of trouble. And those who know Your name put their trust in You, for you, O Lord, have not forsaken those who seek You.”
This is one of David’s responses to the Lord after being delivered from the hands of his oppressors, his enemies. David uses powerful descriptions to describe who God is to Him, a stronghold, a defense that cannot be breached. David looked back on his life and affirmed that God was the one who held him together, stood for him when no one else would.
God has been my stronghold in some of the darkest times of my life. He was a stronghold even when I did not ask Him to. We don’t have to be strong because God is our stronghold.
If we bring God our weakness, grief, and pain, He promises to hold us together. We don’t have to fear our inability to stand or our moments of crumbling in the midst of sorrow.
Just as God held David, so He holds us. David says, “…Those who know Your name put their trust in You…”
We talked about the names of God just a week or so ago;
God our Healer
God our Peace
God our Provider
God our Shepherd
God our Banner
Now God our Stronghold
Every time we need these characteristics of God, we begin to know Him more, and know Him better. His attributes become very personal to us, and as David says, “Those who know Your name put their trust in You…”
Prayer:
Father, thank you for always being there for for me, for standing up for me. For being my stronghold, my Rock, my fortress, an every present help. Thank you for being my peace, my comfort, my encouragement.
