Mark 3:21 ESV
“And when His (Jesus’s) family heard it, they went out to seize Him, for they were saying, “He is out of his mind.”
Jesus was casting out demons and healing the sick. In the verses before this He was appointing His Apostles and He began teaching them. He also gave them authority over evil spirits and empowered them to teach.
His own family doubted His diety and presumed He was crazy, they were possibly embarrassed by Him. I do not know if Mary was in this group, coming to get Jesus and bring Him home, but she of all people should have know who He was and that He must be about the Father’s business.
Mark tells us that when Jesus’ family arrived at the place where he was teaching, they couldn’t get into the house, so they sent a message inside to say they were looking for him. Jesus’ response was probably confusing, at least at first: “Who are my mother and brothers? . . . Whoever does God’s will is my brother and sister and mother.”
Try to imagine Jesus’ mother, Mary, processing this event. Before Jesus was born, an angel had said that this child would be the Savior, the Son of God (Luke 1:31-35). Her heart must have been wrenched! Here again we see the kind of living that Jesus calls us to.
He is focused on the will of God the Father. His family doesn’t understand, so they think he is out of his mind. In fact, they are the confused ones; they have replaced the Father’s will with their own wills. Like Jesus, we are called to serve God first, even when others think we are out of our minds.
Prayer:
Father, it doesn’t make sense to the world when I choose to serve a God they can’t see. It doesn’t make sense to the world that I trust your word and look forward to being with You forever but I do. I too must be about Your work!
