1 Peter 5:8 ESV
“Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.”
When I was a teenager I would go out hunting for small game. The danger of hunting in the woods near our home was there were water moccasins and rattle snakes. So as I would walk quietly in the leaves, I would also keep my eyes open, looking everywhere and I would listen intently for movement in the leaves.
Snakes are not looking for us to hurt us but they will defend their territory. Peter says for us to be level headed, well balanced and sure footed and watch at all times. Why? Because our enemy does want to trip us up and hurt us. He is compared to a roaring lion, a lion that wants to intimidate us and take us down.
Peter says that he is seeking someone to devour. He is not a cartoon figure with pitchfork and a pointed tail, He often appears as an angel of light. Once we let our guard down he will capture us and devour us. He does not play fair nor is he sympathetic, he is an adversary he wants to destroy us. God, strengthens us to be vigilant, watchful, attentive, so, we lean on God and trust Him to protect us from the enemy.
