Your Will be Done

Luke 22:42 NLT
“Father, if you are willing, please take this cup of suffering away from me. Yet I want your will to be done, not mine.”

Jesus knew what was expected of Him. He knew how He was going to die and probably to the minute when He was going to die. Still, in the agony of the moment He asked if there was any other way but He knew what was at stake for you and me, salvation. So, He prayed, “Yet I want your will to be done, not mine.” He knew our salvation was the goal of this selfless act of sacrifice was the only way.

In a moment of uncertainty, He asked the Father if this could happen another way. I’m sure He agonized about what was about to happen to Him. Luke records; “He prayed more fervently, and he was in such agony of spirit that his sweat fell to the ground like great drops of blood” (Luke 22:44).

Jesus taught His disciples to pray, “Your kingdom come, Your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.” Who are we to pray or ask any different than what Jesus prayed or how He told His disciples to pray?

So, today, no matter what I’m asking for, no matter the agony of my heart, I will pray for what I think I need and then add, “nevertheless Father, not my will but your will be done.”

Prayer:
Father today our needs are many. Unfortunately we think what we need is the best way, but beyond our good extensions and the agony of our hearts we ask You for what we need and then add, “not my will but Your will be done. In Jesus name, Amen!
