The Lord Our God is a Sun and Shield
Psalms 84:10-11 ESV
“For a day in your courts is better than a thousand elsewhere. I would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God than dwell in the tents of wickedness. For the Lord God is a sun and shield; the Lord bestows favor and honor. No good thing does he withhold from those who walk uprightly.”
David’s intent was to be in God’s presence. There was no temple at this point, only a tent of meetings established by Moses under God’s direction. The Temple would be built by David’s son.
David says to God one day in your presence is better than a thousand days elsewhere and that is true because in God’s presence is fullness of joy. David says in verse eleven that “the Lord God is a sun and shield; the Lord bestows favor and honor.”
Sun is the honor that He gives and His shield is His favor. When we find ourselves in God’s favor all things are working for His good pleasure and for our good. In that light and favor, He will give us blessings, peace and joy.
Prayer:
Father, I would rather be in Your presence than anywhere else. It is there I will find protection and safety. It is there I will find Your favor and rest on every side.
