Mindset

Colossians 3:2 ESV
“Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth.”

Paul is telling the church at Colosse that since they have given their lives to Christ, they should look to the things that please God, the things that will bring Him glory and honor.

We have all heard the phrase “garbage in, garbage out.” This can come from information that we take in on a daily basis, through TV and radio. Also, from people who sow seeds that are not good seeds. These things will dominate our way of thinking if we do not cleanse ourselves of all this information on a daily, hourly, minute by minute basis.

Dwelling on this earthly information is not always healthy or vital to our wellbeing. We tend to act and react according to the information given. It’s like the song they sang on a comedy program in the 70’s and 80’s Hee Haw, “Gloom, despair and agony on me,” we act according to the constant information given. If it is negative, we become negative.

Paul tells the church at Colosse to change their mindset. Instead of dwelling on the things of this earth, think about the things that are good. These are some of the things that are above according to James; “…the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy and good fruits, impartial and sincere” (James 3:17).

Thinking on these things, the things of God, show us possibilities and promises from God. These things bring joy, peace, and comfort.

I know we have to have a certain amount of earthly information to be current with the times, to be well informed of the issues of our nation and surroundings, to be able to participate in commerce and meaningful activities, but don’t get stuck in this information. Let’s cleanse our minds with the things that are from God, He will show us what is relevant and what is garbage.

Prayer:
Lord, give us the wisdom to decipher the information overload of this world, and be able to set aside this information to keep our minds stayed upon You. You show us what is relevant and what is just information that tries to vie for our time and keep us bogged down. Free up our thinking Lord, show us what is true and honorable, pure and worthy of our time and praise worthy. In Your name Lord, Amen!
