Sober Minded

1 Peter 5:8 ESV

“Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.”

Peter says for us to be levelheaded, well balanced and sure footed and always watch. Why? Because our enemy wants to trip us up and hurt us. He is compared to a roaring lion, a lion that wants to intimidate us and take us down. Peter says that he is seeking someone to devour. He is not a cartoon figure with pitchfork and a pointed tail; He often appears as an angel of light. Once we let our guard down, he will try to harm us. He does not play fair nor is he sympathetic, he is an adversary he wants to destroy us. God strengthens us to be vigilant, watchful, attentive, so, we lean on God and trust Him to protect us from the enemy.

Being sober minded means to think clearly, and keep our emotions well balanced. Become grounded and deeply familiar with God’s words and how to use His words effectively against the enemy.

Prayer:

Lord, we look to You, keep our minds stayed on You. Give us keen insight and directions to avoid our adversary. Guide our thoughts, make us sober minded. In Your name, Lord Jesus, we ask, amen.
