Careful How You Walk
Ephesians 5:15-17 ESV
“Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise, making the best use of the time (redeeming the time), because the days are evil.”
Immediately on reading this verse I thought about walking and being alert to dangers. When I was young I was hunting in the woods one day and I was sneaking up on a duck pond early in the morning. I noticed something ahead of me about 10 feet away. It was a moccasin all wraped up like a rope ready to strike. Of course I shot and killed it, but I learned from that moment, in Florida, in the wild, watch every step.
Spiritually, Paul said that we are to walk as wise people of God because the days are evil. Just like with the mocassin, there are a lot of spiritual pitfalls in our path everyday as well. We can get drawn into follish thinking, making quick decisions without asking God for wisdom. We can easily be fooled by half truths without knowing all the facts.
The days are evil and they are getting worse everyday. It’s not the time to fear or lock ourselves inside, we just have to ask God for wisdom, guidance, direction and show a lot of discernment because there are pitfalls in this world.
Paul’s idea behind redeeming the time is that we buy up opportunities like a shrewd businessman. We make the most of every opportunity for Jesus Christ. Be wise, discern the day, the way, and the situations that present themselves.
Prayer:
Father, I learned a valuable lesson as a boy about where I walk. Now, make me wise to walk in the Spirit.
