Expecting to be Rewarded for Doing the Right Thing
Ecclesiastes 11:1 ESV
“Cast your bread upon the waters, for you will find it after many days.”
Do good! don’t think about it, don’t postulate, no pretense, just do the right thing, even if it doesn’t pay dividends. This proverb by Solomon is short and to the point. Bread can be substituted for seed and soil and water for waters, it will sound like this; “if you cast your seed on good soil with plenty of water, it will grow into a great harvest.”
Most take this proverb as saying, “if you give sparingly it will come back to you after awhile.” I say, “do good, be generous and God will reward you in time.” We foolishly think if we give generously, magically someone, possibly even the recipient of our gifts, will give it all back, but that does not always happen.
I had a friend that gave away about $60,000 to $80,000 away to people wanting to bless and help people. He had a heart of gold but he listened to someone that said if he did that God would give it back many times over. My friend did a good thing but for the wrong expectancy and the plan failed.
Now if God tells you to give something, give it, He will supply and He will repay. But if we give to get, what reward is there for that! Just do the right thing!
Prayer:
Father, I will give generously as you have gifted me to give without hopes to get back.
