Ecclesiastes 4:9-12 ESV
“Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their toil. For if they fall, one will lift up his fellow. But woe to him who is alone when he falls and has not another to lift him up! Again, if two lie together, they keep warm, but how can one keep warm alone? And though a man might prevail against one who is alone, two will withstand him—a threefold cord is not quickly broken.”
We all know the value of companionship or friendship. Two can get a job done faster, better because each one has different skill sets. If one falls down physically their friend or companion will lift them up. The same if someone falls spiritually the friend or companion will help them get back on the right path.
The next phrase is more for companionship but two can keep warm better than just one. If one is attacked the friend or companion can help fight off the perpetrator. If one is attacked by the evil one, the friend or companion can pray them through and give them wise counsel.
The phrase; “a threefold cord is not quickly broken,” is typically used in weddings meaning that a man and a woman and God can withstand anything life brings their way. I will expand this to friends as well. Two friends that have created a special bond, with Christ in the center of their relationship can also withstand anything life brings their way.
Prayer:
Father we need companionship and we need friendship. Special bonds between companions and friends help us get through lifes ups and downs. Help me to always keep friends close around me, they will give me strength and courage to make the road smoother.
