Esther 4:15-16 ESV
“Then Esther told them to reply to Mordecai, “Go, gather all the Jews to be found in Susa, and hold a fast on my behalf, and do not eat or drink for three days, night or day. I and my young women will also fast as you do. Then I will go to the king, though it is against the law, and if I perish, I perish.”
Selflessness is a lost art. It is more news worthy these days to be selfish, rude, brash or self-centered. When people are selfless, they think more about the needs of others. Selfless people set their own feelings aside for the greater good.
Esther was a new queen, the last queen had been banished for her actions. Now, Esther was her replacement and she didn’t want to shake things up in her new role. When Mordecai asked Esther to approach the King on behalf of the Jews, all she could think about was what would happen to her for breaking the Kings commandment.
When Mordecai sent word to Esther that she had a decision to make, Be part of the solution or ignore a great destruction of the Jews. The appeal touched Esther’s heart and she responded with; “Go, gather all the Jews to be found in Susa, and hold a fast on my behalf, and do not eat or drink for three days, night or day. I and my young women will also fast as you do. Then I will go to the king, though it is against the law, and if I perish, I perish.”
Esther decided to be a part of the solution even though it could have cost her, her life and her position as queen. Our acts of selflessness may never be that sacrificial but nevertheless as important if it is for God.
Prayer:
Father, teach me to not think of myself when others need my help. Teach me to be giving, to be part of the solution.
