To Be Complete
Matthew 19:21-22
“Jesus said to him, “If you would be perfect, go, sell what you possess and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me.”
When the young man heard this he went away sorrowful, for he had great possessions.” Strange that Jesus told the young man, “if you would be PERFECT, go, sell what you possess and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven.”
One of the better translations that help us understand this statement better is, uses complete instead of perfect. Remember the young man had said that he had fulfilled all the law had required, well, there was one thing that stood in his way of being complete in the eyes of God.
Riches had a hold on him, he counted on his wealth, he was satisfied knowing his wealth was there in case anything happened in life. But to trust God COMPLETELY, he needed to let go of his security blanket, his money. What is the one thing we are holding back from God?
Perhaps the need for control?
Fear of the unknown?
Love of material things?
Negative self image?
Inability to completely trust God?
Desire to do things our way?
Prayer:
God, do an inventory of my heart and mind and see if there is anything that I’m holding back from You. I want to be complete in You!
