The Words of My Mouth
Psalms 19:14 ESV
“Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in your sight, O Lord, my rock and my redeemer.”
Our words should comfort, teach, counsel, or edify those who hear them. Colossians 4:6 exhorts us to use speech that is “gracious, seasoned with salt, so that [we] may know how [we] ought to answer each person.” Hebrews 10:25 summons us to encourage one another.
Ephesians 4:15 directs us to speak the truth in love, and Ephesians 5:19 tells us, “addressing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody to the Lord with your heart”.
Jesus taught that the heart is the source of our words. He declared, “For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks” (Matthew 12:34). So David, the man after God’s own heart, asks God, “Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in your sight.” That meant David didn’t have any excuse, we don’t have any excuse for our thoughts, our actions, and our words.
David ended with addressing the Lord, my rock (or my strength and vitality) and my Redeemer (the one who bought us with a price on a cruel tree). He suffered and died and rose again to redeem us from sin.
Probably the best prayer to pray today and every day: Lord, “Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in your sight, O Lord, my rock and my redeemer.” In Your name Lord. Amen!
