My Cup Overflows
Psalms 23:5a
“You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.”
Oil may be something that we do not want poured on our head but catch this meaning; This was an ancient custom of hospitality and respect shown to important dinner guests. The host would anoint his invitee’s head with oil. The oil was mixed with fragrant perfumes to refresh and soothe weary travelers.
Now picture this, the Lord has invited you to His table. You come in and you sit down, and He anoints your head with such a soft divine oil mixed with a fragrance that is not offensive but soothing. You are at complete ease and refreshed.
Then you find out, you are not just there for one meal, but you are there in the Lord’s presence, at the Lords table forever. Every meal will begin with this same anointing, the same blessing, the same peace, the same fulfillment.
There is no other statement at this moment then to say, “my cup overflows!” You are so filled with love, acceptance, and gratitude that you feel like you cannot contain all that God has for you, your cup overflows.
Prayer:
Lord, in Your presence there is fullness of joy; at Your right hand are pleasures forevermore (Psalms 16:11b). We receive Your invitation, and we come to Your table, where we find rest and assurance that we are with You forever and no one or thing can take that away from us. Our cup overflows in Your presence Lord Jesus, Amen!
