James 1:27 ESV
“Religion that is pure and undefiled before God the Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their affliction, and to keep oneself unstained from the world.”
Life used to be simple. We looked out for one another, and we did things for one another. But two groups of people have relatively been ignored even from the Bible times; widows and orphans. This passage says our defining point in religion is to take care of widows and orphans in their distress and “refusing to let the world corrupt you.” (NLT)
We typically ignore the fact that there are widows and orphans and believe someone that has a calling for that ministry will step up and to take care of them. As far as refusing to let the world corrupt us? That is harder than one may think.
Little by little, the world chips away at our morals and standards, Ever so slightly that we can hardly detect that it is happening. We start to look like the world, then we start to sound like the world, and then we start acting like the world. It’s getting harder to resist the world standards. Faith is not enough to get us through, we have to add virtue or Christ’s standards to overcome this world’s standards.
Prayer:
Father, never let me forget those that are alone such as widows and orphans, they need to know we care deeply! Father, give me the grace and wisdom to push back at the world’s standards. I choose to take on the virtues of Christ and not be like this world.
