Genesis 14:21-23 ESV
“And the king of Sodom said to Abram, “Give me the persons, but take the goods for yourself.” But Abram said to the king of Sodom, “I have lifted my hand to the Lord, God Most High, Possessor of heaven and earth, that I would not take a thread or a sandal strap or anything that is yours, lest you should say, ‘I have made Abram rich.”
Explanation:
After Abraham rescued his nephew Lot from an enemy, and all their belongings, he met with the King of Sodom to return the people and their things. The King tried to get Abraham to take part of the goods that was retrieved but Abraham refused. He said; “I have lifted my hand to the Lord, God Most High, Possessor of heaven and earth, that I would not take a thread or a sandal strap or anything that is yours, lest you should say, ‘I have made Abram rich.”
Abraham had the right, after all he and his men went and vanquished the enemy amd brought those from Sodom back to Sodom. But he was not entitled, he knew his blessings came from the Lord, the Creator of all things. He trusted God to provide for him and his household and he would not take payment from men, especially in this situation. God was Abraham’s provider, God was his Jehovah Jireh.
No one is entitled (believing oneself to be inherently deserving of privileges or special treatment.) We are blessed beyond measure, but not entitled. God blesses us because He loves us, not because we are deserving of anything on our own merit.
Prayer:
Father, because of Your great love and mercy You have blessed us far more than we deserve. We are not entitled in this life, in this world. All we have is because of You. In Your name Father God, Amen!
