Secret Sin
John 8:3-7 NLT
“As he was speaking, the teachers of religious law and the Pharisees brought a woman who had been caught in the act of adultery. They put her in front of the crowd. “Teacher,” they said to Jesus, “this woman was caught in the act of adultery. The law of Moses says to stone her. What do you say?”
They were trying to trap him into saying something they could use against him, but Jesus stooped down and wrote in the dust with his finger. They kept demanding an answer, so he stood up again and said, “All right, but let the one who has never sinned throw the first stone!”
The Pharisees were testing Jesus to see if He would give them a reaction that they could use against Him. Jesus thwarted that plan and took the Pharisees by surprise with His solution to their problem. The Pharisees were phonies and Jesus exposed their hypocrisy.
The lady caught in adultery had committed a sin, first of all against God and second of all against a man. She had to live with that decision but Jesus let her know she was still important to God.
No one knows what Jesus was writing on the ground that day but I heard a minister speculate that He was writing down secret sins of the Pharisees.
The Pharisees thought they were going to win this bout and they walked away defeated and ashamed. There are no secret sins. God may be the only one that sees them but they are still sin.
The best we can do is confess our sins and receive Jesus’s forgiveness and move on and sin no more.
Prayer:
Lord, cleanse my heart, forgive me of all my sins and those sins that only You see. Thank you for Your atonement, thank you for your love, thank You for Your acceptance.
